Technical Team Resolves Critical ACB Failure

Our buildings are supported by a dedicated, in-house Technical Team, providing expert engineering support when it matters most.

Recently, our Technical Team responded to an emergency call following a burning smell detected in the West Main LV Switchroom at one of our buildings, accompanied by a loss of power to the main LV switchboard. Our engineers attended site promptly to investigate and quickly identified the source as the main ACB serving the West Retail Switchboard.

The breaker was safely withdrawn for inspection, where the team discovered a catastrophic failure of the motor mechanism. Following an external power failure, the motor had likely continued running while attempting to recharge the stored-energy mechanism, eventually overheating. This resulted in insulation breakdown and damage to internal components.

Further testing confirmed the breaker protection remained healthy. A blown control fuse was also identified and replaced, allowing supplies to be safely restored through functional switching.

The generator was returned to rest, with final checks confirming all supplies had been successfully restored.

Following the investigation, our Technical Team recommended replacing the ACB, as the existing unit is now obsolete and replacement parts are no longer available.

Another example of our Technical Team responding quickly and effectively to minimise disruption, identify the root cause and restore critical services.
