Why are Thermography Surveys important?

The above image is an example of one of the faults found during a recent thermography survey. The cable and termination serving a tap-off unit was found to be operating at an elevated temperature.

A reducing temperature gradient can be noticed from the crimped termination, indicating a high resistance connection. Jaguar were able to rectify this issue at the earliest opportunity by replacing the lug and reterminating the cable.

Potential electrical faults generate excessive heat, for example faulty components and loose, oxidised or corroded connections. Thermal Imaging can be used to detect these faults. The technique is particularly valuable where plant breakdown would critically affect a business, i.e. a computer equipment room.
